Check Your Spring Tension

Our last post is a good reason for everyone with a garage door to check your spring tension.  It is simple to check to make sure your springs are adjusted properly.

First make sure your garage door is closed.  With the garage door closed, walk to the center of the door and pull the emergency release cord.  It should be hanging in the center just above the closed garage door.  The release cord is the red rope in the picture above.

Now, lift your garage door two to three feet off of the floor and try to let go.  If your door falls back down to the floor, your springs need to be adjusted.  They may have naturally lost tension or the springs may not be the correct size.  your door should stay up if you lift it half way.  Lastly, reattach your opener and you are all done.

If it isn’t adjusted properly or if you have the wrong size spring, you could end up like the guy in our last post.  Your door and opener could be damaged by improperly adjusted springs.  Check your spring tension before you think there is a problem.  It will save you money for sure.  Let us know if you have any questions.

Broken Springs? Check Prices First.

If you have a broken garage door spring, do your research first.  If you don’t, you may get a bill like the one above.  That total is $565.96 for two springs.

The invoice is from a man that called us after another company (not us) replaced his springs.   He was unable to get in touch with the other company, so he gave us a call.  We went out to give him a free estimate.  When we got there, we discovered that his door had the wrong size springs on it.

The wrong size springs had caused damage to his opener and bent the top section of his garage  door.  We quoted him for a new set of springs.  That is when he told me how much he had paid for the incorrect springs and showed me the bill.  I had to take a picture of it.  I couldn’t believe it!

There are many prices and garage door companies in the Dallas, Ft Worth area.  Do your research first.  Check company reviews, call around for the most competitive price, ask your friends for referrals, or have someone come out for a free estimate.  Make sure you hire a company that is easy to get in touch with if there is a problem.  This will save you a lot of heartache later on.
